Stress in the work situation is common. In itself, working is already a form of stress that needs to be compensated in our sleep and other moments of rest. But in our modern society that stress can take extreme forms. Especially working under – for example – time pressure is a heavy burden on our nervous system. But also a boss who constantly looks over your shoulder can be experienced as extreme stress. The most extreme form of stress that one can encounter at work, is when one has to do several things at the same time. For the human nervous system, this is – in general – too much of a burden.

The wrong job

Sometimes people have chosen the wrong job. They do work that they do not really want. Or they do work that is beyond their capabilities. In these situations the fact that you have to go to this job every day is a continuous stress load. It can even be hidden to the person self that the chosen job is wrong. Assistance from another person (therapist, psychologist or psychiatrist) can sometimes be necessary to recognize this.

Changing the work situation

People who suffer from chronic hyperventilation are often people who overload themselves with stress. They compensate too little and go on and on. They ignore the signals the body is giving and thereby create a basis for the development of a hyperventilation syndrome. Often, the work situation is only examined after the first hyperventilation attack has occurred. Unfortunately, in those cases people have already gone over the critical point. And the long agony of chronic hyperventilation has begun.

Learn where the boundaries lie

Nevertheless, much can be done to improve the work situation. The workload can be reduced by going into proper consultation with the boss at work. But the most important thing is to recognize that you have to change your mental attitude yourself. And that is not easy to do. It is in the very nature of people who develop hyperventilation syndrome to demand (too) much of themselves. One must therefore learn where the boundaries lie. And ensure that they do not overload themselves.

Resume work after a period without work

Often, people with chronic hyperventilation end up in a situation that they are no longer able to do their work. The symptoms have become so bad that they are no longer able to participate (fully) in the labor process. After you have successfully cured yourself with the HyperVen therapy, the time comes to go back to work. Usually a quiet build-up is a good way to restart your work. If of course feasible. Discuss this with your boss. Explaining the details of your situation often helps to get a better understanding.

Take sufficient rest moments

It is important not to end up in the pitfall of stress at work again. Make sure you keep a healthy lifestyle. Ensure a reasonable workload. Make sure not to do work under time pressure. And especially do not do several things at the same time. Take sufficient rest moments. If you do yoga or meditation, make sure you continue to do so when you start working again.
