Can you suddenly develop hyperventilation?

CHV does not happen overnight. It is a gradual decrease of the CO2 buffer systems (and decrease of the tolerance of the respiratory center), which slowly leads us to the CHV syndrome. One does not notice anything as long as there is enough buffer to compensate the hyperventilation. At the moment the buffers are not sufficient any more, the blood becomes alkaline and suddenly we are facing the first variety of symptoms. This usually immediately triggers the first hyperventilation attack! Although it looks like it suddenly began, it has been going on for a long time (sometimes even years!)

Once the amount of buffers is getting short, and the respiratory center has become used to the low acidity of the blood, it will maintain the hyperventilation. This can continue for years and years. In some cases people keep hyperventilating for the rest of their life...

Fortunately we now have the HyperVen therapy, which leads us to a life without hyperventilation. Thanks to this pioneering therapy we can now live a normal life again, once we have eliminated our CHV.
